Fort Wilderness is one of our favorite campgrounds to visit. Besides being part of the Disney World family of resorts in Orlando, it is an amazing place to stay. You could easily visit here without going into any of the theme parks and have an amazing vacation.
From a campground point of view - it's landscaped beautifully so you feel like you're in the "wilderness," sites are spaced out nicely so you're not right next to your neighbors, and amenities are top notch. There are two pools, stocked ponds, little stores, restaurants, food and ice cream trucks, daily arts and crafts and activities, a horse barn with trail rides and pony rides, and SO much more. They play a Disney movie on the outdoor big screen next to the campfire every night, and we enjoyed doing that several times. We love the wildlife throughout the campground - turkeys, lizards, squirrels, armadillos, deer. BONUS - every night from the dock, you can see the fireworks from Magic Kingdom and see the light up boat show (a.k.a. "Electric Water Pageant."). A lot of people rent golf carts, or bring their own, to get around the large campground. We opted to ride our bikes everywhere, and that worked great. Campers also decorate their sites here more than anywhere we've seen, and it's so festive and fun!
If you do plan to visit any of the Disney theme parks, there is a boat that departs from the campground dock on Bay Lake every 10 minutes or so that goes back and forth to Magic Kingdom. There are also buses and a monorail systems throughout Disney (all free to resort guests.) We love taking advantage of the free boat transportation to hop over to other resorts and grab dinner or just explore.
Staying at Fort Wilderness is definitely pricey even for Florida standards, but in our opinion, it's totally worth the splurge!
