STARLINK IS TRENDING!
We've continued to notice Starlink satellites popping up all over campgrounds across the country, so this peeked our interest in the new-ish internet service for RV life. We spoke to several other campers about their Starlink service, and everyone loved it! It took a few months of pondering, but we did decide to join in as well.
WHAT WE'VE BEEN USING FOR RV INTERNET
For the past three years, we've been using the Verizon Mifi for WIFI internet service on the go. It was easy enough and worked fairly well, but we didn't love it. One big con for us was the limited amount of data each month (even on the best plan offered.) We don't use a lot of data. We mainly use WIFI to power our RV's smart tv for movie nights, and occasional laptop use for work, pictures, and videos.
SETUP WAS A BREEZE
We're not overly experienced in the technology setup department, so I was a little apprehensive about installing this new system in our RV ourselves. Other campers assured us that it was as easy as pie, and sure enough - it was!
Our satellite box arrived about 1.5 weeks after we ordered it, and it was as easy as plugging it in and downloading the app.
ARE THERE ANY CONS?
I think the biggest cons to the Starlink vs. the Verizon Mifi service would be:
STORAGE: Starlink satellite is larger than the Mifi / storage in the rig on move days
OBSTRUCTIONS: You do need a clear opening towards the North for best service (We feel like this is available in most of the campground we visit
PRICE: Starlink ($139/month) is slightly more than Verizon Mifi ($80/month); however, we feel like the unlimited data and much faster service is worth the difference in price.
CAN WE ONLY USE IT IN OUR RV?
No! The same Starlink satellite we are using for our RV internet can be used for residential service as well. We loved the idea of this flexibility. There are a variety of mounts available from Starlink or other vendors for roof or pole placements.
