Surf City
We just happened on Surf City as we made our way back down through North Carolina. We only had one evening and morning here, but we made the most of it at the beach. North Carolina has the most beautiful beaches! The kids had the best time ever playing in the sand. There were several people fishing from the huge pier as well as from the beach. One man showed us the speckled sea trout he was catching. Raymond spotted whales just off in the distance.
A bridge with phenomenal views connects the beach on the outer banks to the mainland.
The campground was full and there was a little dock out on the water close by where we enjoyed a stroll with our morning coffee.
Wilmington
An easy drive down the coast from Surf City, we stopped in Wilmington, North Carolina, just for a short stay. Wilmington is rich in history but has a rough side, facing many of the same urban struggles a lot of cities do. We strolled the historic downtown one afternoon and spotted the USS Carolina parked in Cape Fear, as well as the Cotton Exchange building, which was the center of cotton trade during the 19th century.
